Back to school and Pirate Football

WOW - what a week! The kids went back to school on Tuesday, our A/C went out on Wednesday, and we had the high school football home opener on Friday. The kids transitioned into their new schools/classes nicely and we had some Amazon fun (they shipped the replacement A/C part...but the bubble pak arrived empty and unsealed on Saturday)...so we are still without A/C. I tried to remind the fam that 1) millions of people in this world live without A/C and 2) I am here all day working and not complaining!!!
Back to school started with a beautiful sunrise on our walk to the bus. Lots of parents were there and waiting to see Brenner's new haircut....how word spreads in a small town lol!
Nola was a bit nervous on the first day - not wanting to eat much breakfast. But she was all smiles for mom's mandatory pictures.
Brenner (freshman) and Nola (6th grade)
Game day...all boys dress out for home games. Brenner had some ups and downs throughout the week kicking at practice. The coach cussed at him Monday - B was having an off day. He took it in stride and I reminded him we all have off days - and it likely will happen in a game at some point. But you continue to show up. Like the 6 am practice Thursday for varsity where you warm up and then don't get called in for any plays. You continue to show up. Especially as a freshman.
National Anthem (Spot the White Rabbit near the goal post.)
Running onto the field (I have yet to spot the White Rabbit).
Coin toss.
Brenner was very nervous (read that as rude and bit mom's head off) on the ride in. Coach told him that he may be kicking a couple. Brenner didn't know he would be doing the game kickoff after the Pirates won the toss. He set up the ball and was ready to go. We waited and waited and waited....I was a little nervous he was overthinking it. He told us later that his teammates were yelling at him to kick but he was waiting on the refs whistle. They kept telling him to kick so he did.....and they got called back to wait on the whistle. I told him - wow that had to be stressful- knowing what to do but other hollering at you - the freshman! But a good reminder - you keep showing up and working hard!
Brenner was AMAZING! Great job as a freshman - didn't get the distance for the touchback but still did great.
Video of his game kickoff from our pastor....hope it loads! The Pirates didn't play well overall and walked away with a loss. JV plays Monday so Brenner should get more kicking and hopefully some defensive time. Although this momma is fine with him staying as kicker :)
Saturday morning they both ended up in our bed....not sure why as our room is one of the hottest without the A/C!
Some room cleanup...although I really think she is just avoiding putting away her clothes! Nola has enjoyed her classes so far - and notes how fast the day goes by switching teachers/classrooms. Right now her favorite class is science. Funny story - she has been reading Ghost Soldiers. When she pulled it out of her bag in Social Studies, she heard her teacher gasp and called her over to his desk. Mr. V than asked if he could borrow it when she is done because he hasn't been able to locate a copy. She said sure:)
Brenner had geometry homework this weekend which makes that his least favorite class lol! Here he is working on memorizing the FFA creed.
Football team pics that are also banners hung up at the high school. Photos taken by Creation by Diana and posted on her public facebook page.

Back to school prep

And just like that, summer is over! We spent the last full week of no school - doing pretty much what we have done all summer- work, football, family time. But Nola and I threw in a fun girl's day at the end of the week. We are praying for all of the student, teachers, and staff - may this year be the best yet!
Matt sent me these pictures of Brenner's orientation. I am not sure what was so funny but love the image!
Nola is ready for middle school - tested her lock for her locker - she was all good!
Nola spent some time learning to draw anime. Thanks Youtube.
The boys.
Brenner getting a driving lesson. He usually does well....this night they came home grouchy!
Friday girl's day started with breakfast.....
.....then getting our nails done......
...some silly shopping...although we were on the hunt for longer shorts......
....ending with lunch/ice cream. Fun memories!
Friday night, Brenner had a football jamboree. He got a helmet to the back of his calf. He toughed it out but took Saturday easy. Nola set up this home movie theater on Saturday. We watched The 355 - it was pretty good!

Week in Milwaukee

I spent the week at the Tribal Lands and Environment Forum in Milwaukee. The weather was fantastic. Matt was kept busy with the kids and their activities - he was ready for a break by my return on Friday!

The meeting was very good - my first in-person TLEF.
My friend attended virtually and grabbed some screen shots of my presentation. It is a project that I have a lot of passion for - it was great to finally present it to an audience!
My collaborator Carletta Tilousi representing the Havasupai Tribe. I have learned so much from her and appreciate her trust in working with me.
Morning walks to Lake Michigan did not disappoint. Day 1.
Day 2
Day 3
Pretty sure this boat has my name on it!
So much city....but there were the wonderful green areas where the insect were audible - just wonderful!
Waiting for the sidewalk to come down :)
Nola being silly with Dad after her soccer practice. Yes - she is playing again this year!
Nola also went to work with Matt this week since I was gone.
Brenner continued to work hard at football. Has some turf burn to prove it!
I was back to take Nola to practice on Friday night.
Saturday morning was picture and "try-out" day for Brenner. 64 players total. Coaches meeting with the parents was good overall - I like the high expectations in the classroom and on the field.
Love this guy!
Silly - just silly.

Dead week is heat week

This week was dead week for football so a little less running around for us! Matt spent a few extra days at the cabin while the rest of us worked from home. It was so H-O-T - I am ready for fall!
Matt wrapped up the tile in the shower at the cabin. It looks beautiful!
Nola with Ginny and Norm. She helped out a neighbor who went on vacation. We would ride bikes over at noon-ish to let them (and two other dogs Rory and Chloe) out of their kennels. Other folks were taking care of the evening and morning shifts - we were just the mid-day potty break :)
Nola spent a few days with Grandma Val and Cousin Gannon this week as well. One day they ventured to Science City. I call this the pringle climb :) Nola had not fear of heights! Gannon didn't go all the way to the top!
On the helicopter!
Grandma Val is the best!
All energy expended by the time they were waiting for dinner to arrive lol!
The crazy football schedule!
High school registration is next week - with school pictures being taken. I told Brenner that he needed a haircut before pictures. Matt took him.....
...and this is how he returned!!!! I was shocked! He looks so grown up. It was so funny the reactions he got at the soccer club swim party and church. Everyone has comments how grown up he looks.
Just a few of the pretty flowers/plants that are surviving despite the 100+ temps all week. The last one was a small plant that Nola gave me from Sunday school class!
Saturday night sunset. Just gorgeous. It is fun to watch how quickly colors change. God is good.
